Short answer
Risk 1 is a classroom session of about 3.5 hours on alcohol and drugs, fatigue in traffic and other risky behaviour. It is mandatory for a Swedish car licence and for motorcycle licences, requires no prior knowledge and no learner permit, and is valid until the day you get your licence, at most five years.
What is Risk 1 about?
The Swedish Transport Agency describes risk education part 1 as covering alcohol and drugs, fatigue in traffic and other risky behaviour. It is not a course on traffic rules or on how the car works. Risk 1 is about you as a driver: how alcohol and tiredness affect you, how peer pressure and stress lead to bad decisions, and what actually happens when it goes wrong.
In practice it is an instructor-led group session where a large part of the time is discussion. There is no exam: you pass by taking part in the whole session and reaching all the course goals.
How long does it take?
At Landvetter Halkbana Risk 1 takes about 3.5 hours excluding breaks. Count on half a day. Coffee is on us.
What does it cost?
Risk 1 for car in English costs 600 kr. If you do Risk 1 and Risk 2 on the same day in the combo course, it is cheaper than booking separately.
Who has to do Risk 1?
Everyone getting a Swedish licence for a car (B) or a motorcycle (A1, A2 and A). The course is different for cars and motorcycles: the Transport Agency is clear that risk education for cars does not count for motorcycles, and vice versa.
Requirements
- No learner permit (körkortstillstånd).
- No prior knowledge. You do not need to have started practice driving.
- Valid photo ID when you arrive (BankID is not accepted).
- No driving-school enrolment needed.
When should I do it?
Whenever it suits you. Many do it early, since it requires no driving experience, and save Risk 2 (the skid pan) for the end. Both parts must be completed and valid before you take the theory test and the driving test. Read more in Risk 1 or Risk 2 first?
How long is it valid?
